Hi,

I was out shopping the other day, when I noticed just how many shoppers were purchasing dog food from the supermarket shelves!

Is this the best way to make sure your dog is well looked after, diet and nutrition wise? I don’t think so. I just think we as a society are becoming a little too pressed for time and are giving into supermarket giants and any dog foods to feed our beloved family pets- if we happen to be supermarket shopping, then why not purchase the dog foods available in the same isles we do our family shopping?

I don’t think there are many dog foods available on the supermarket shelves that can claim to be natural and well balanced. This is why I try to provide my dogs (and I have had a few dogs over the years) with my own recipes, sometimes even using raw foods.

This is just something for you to think about before purchasing pre-packaged supermarket dog foods. Did you know that many world famous Doctors of Veterinary Medicine and many Published Dog Care Experts universally agree that any dog that eats commercial dog food as a ‘normal diet’, is at a much higher risk of dying prematurely. And by the time any symptoms are noticeable it is often too late to prevent an agonizing early and sometimes even slow death.

This is just something for you to ponder next time you are thinking about purchasing supermarket processed dog food. Any way I hope I have not depressed you too much speaking about dogs and death, but at least you know the eventual outcome can be reversed by simply watching what you feed your dog.

Take care for now.

I will be getting back to you shortly with some natural and easy to make Free Dog Food Recipes.

Rosie, I am feeding my Pom Casper IAMS dog food he is doing ok with it so I will wait to hear back from you on the foods you reccomend, for him.

Pompassionate @ 4:02 am

My Pom has brown rice and chicken breast with green beans (steamed) or carrots sliced really thin, raw or a little dolop of sour cream to help with digestion.

Victoria @ 3:55 pm

I ended up with a Maltese instead of Pom, however the question of food remains a
big one for me since both my previous pets (cat & poodle) both ate nothing their
whole lives but Purina One (for cat & for dog) and both died hugely obese & early of complications of diabetes! I am convinced the grain based Purina One is one of the dog food giants slowly killing our pets. My problem is that I worry that if I feed raw or meat-based that the waste problem {my 9 mo old lives inside but goes out "most of the time" to potty} will be more wet, smelly, yucky waste than on a grain-based diet kibble. I've been feeding mine Royal Canin kibble (age appropriate) since we got him at barely 6 weeks old. But he often tries to eat
his waste in the backyard and he mouths/chews constantly on something (human
hands/arms too) since we got him. He also has become a barking maniac when he's
out there or if anyone or any dog at all even comes down our street. Other than
all this, he's just great! Any advice welcomed! My son wants to put a bark collar
on him but at only 7 to 8 pounds, I think it would be a bad idea but have no idea
how to stop this behavior (I have health problems, retired, so not loads of
energy). Thank you in advance for any advice!

MARCIA @ 6:10 pm

Hi Rosie, I give my Pom 'BENEFUL' by Purina. The Beneful has veggies in it. He loves fresh veggies! My husband thinks he's part rabbit. Bear waits impatiently while I am preparing a salad. He LOVES lettuce! I give him a little tomato now & then too. I know onions are poison for dogs. He also gets the Purina Pro Plan biscuits for small dogs. The Lamb & Rice formula. I wonder why beef is an allergen for dogs. Do you know?

After doing some checking I am buying Blue dog food for my toy poms. What do you think of this brand? It claims to have no by-products… The website I checked out is BlueBuff.com. One of my Mother in law's yorkies died b/c of dog food complications & they fed them only what they thought to be high quality foods too.

Hi,
I have been feeding my two pekingese (and one pomeranian I fostered until earlier this year, when he went back to a former owner)a variation of chicken, rice and vegetables for years. The pekes (7 and 14) are very healthy–no chronic illnesses. For treats, I gave the pom radishes from the farmer's market, pieces of cheese, organic carrot sticks. the pekes had the same treats, but didn't love radishes like the pom. Recipe is simple, and slow-cooks the chicken so all the collagen is cooked into the rice and vegetables. Here it is: 5 big chicken thighs,
1 and 1/2 cup enriched white rice, 1 large package of frozen french style green beans (not small box)or box of frozen chopped broccoli and box of froxen french style green beans. Cook chicken and box of veggies (save some for later) in water and salt about 1 hour, until very soft. Add rice, rest of veggies, and about 1/2 cup water, bring to boil and cook on medium heat, covered, for 15 minutes, then turn off heat and let sit for 10 minutes. Take the chicken out, cool, take off the bone and cut up into little pieces, then return to the rice and veggies and stir with large spoon, making a mixture of chicken, rice and vegetables.

Victoria, To answer your fears about a raw diet creating more "wet, smelly, yucky waste than on a grain-based diet kibble" I wanted to assure you that that is certainly not the case. I have 3 dogs (2 keeshonden and 1 pom) who are all rawfed and the waste is actually much smaller, drier and LESS smelly than on a kibble diet. The reason being that the dogs absorb nearly all of the nutrients out of the raw food so very little goes to waste. In fact, my dogs usually have a drier, pale brown waste that after a day or two goes completely white and crumbles to dust. Very little pick up needed. HTH's.

Hi! I have an 8 month old pom. She is very picky sometimes with her food. I am feeding her Purinia Pro Plan for small breeds- as thatis what my breeder was feeding her nad recommended. She loves fruit and raw veggies-especially carrots. When I feed my cat I have to mix a little(like a teaspoon) of my cat's can food to her dry food and then she eats some of it. I tried giviingher a little moist dog food- Beneful and Cesar, but she was not crazy for either. PLEAS HELP.

Betsy @ 3:00 pm

I have two poms, one is 2 yrs, the other about 10 mos old. Both eat Beneful dry puppy kibble and each get about 2 Tbsp browned hamburger mixed in for flavor. When they were wee I used to split a jar of baby food (lamb, turkey, beef etc) between them once a day. They are wonderful, eager eaters. I also have two large dogs who eat only Beneful dry flavored with browned hamburger. All are in excellent weight and have predictable bowels. My dad is a small animal vet with a practice in Southern California these past 45 years and he is very pleased with the condition of my dogs. It seems a simple diet but it has worked very well for my poms as well as my big dogs.
For snacks I usually only treat with raw baby carrots and once in a while they get a pigs ear or denta-bone.

Hi,
I just wanted to let you know that I know have two Chihuahuas. One is only six months old this month. He is doing well on Imns Puppy Food. Is this okay for him? He gets Milk Bone Treats on occasion and also a piece of chicken or beef from the table as a special treat. He is very hyper and wants to bite on our arms and legs and on our older Chichuahua when playing. They are both Alpha dogs and are very selfish with everthing, since they both insist on haveing the same toy, chew toy or each others food. ( we have to seperate them during feeding time.)
Just wanted to let you know that we no longer have a Pom.
Peggy

Jenny @ 7:19 pm

Hi Rosie,
I feed my Pom Nutro-Ultra. I also give him table food he loves vegetables especially lettuce and fruit. I am wandering if Nutro-Ultra is a good brand or we shouldn't be giving them dry dog food at all, let me know what is the best for treating our dogs. I know my sister gives her dog some other brand that is natural. We look for natural dog foods, but now I question it. Let me know what is actually the best!

Elena @ 7:46 pm

hi Rosie.
i have found most of the diet tips here most useful for my pom.
As a puppy from 4 months to 10 months i have been feeding her Royal Canine Junior and only recently i have mixed RCJ with Butcher's Choice which has four different varieties;-chicken with ham and mushrooms;-beef with chicken and carrots;-turkey with game and vegetables;-lamb with kidney and peas. I am now going to look forward to cook some fresh foods for my pom i.e. brown rice, steam vegetables and chicken.

John Udisky @ 2:05 am

I have been feeding our long haired chi Halo Brand Chicken wet canned food mixed with dry chicken Halo. We since ran out of the wet canned Hallo and picked up a couple of weeks supply of Beniful Chicken wet food. The labels are similar to caned human food with a lot of scientific names that are only routinely understood by a nutritionist. What is you view of these brand foods? Am I doing the right thing by feeding him these foods?
Thank you so very much.
Sincerely,
John Udisky

Does your Pom eat this meal? Mine is so fussy, she will hardly eat anything that is good for her. I don't feed her commercial foods, but she wouldn't eat then anyhow.
Thanks, Mary

Kerry @ 2:34 pm

I have 4 Poms a Boxer and an Aussie Shep that all share our home. After losing our Rottie and my parents Sheltie to "EXCELLENT" high quality, all natural, very expensive kibble diets a few years back and then having 2 of my Poms have allergic reactions to kibble I decided I wanted to know EVERYTHING they were eating. I DO NOT trust processed dog foods! Not any of them. I have a very busy household with our dog family, a teenage daughter and a son with Autism as well as a job and husband BUT I find the time each week to through together a fresh cooked weeks worth of food for our dogs. It is easy to take a very large roasting pan, add a few lbs of raw ground beef (I get our butcher to add heart, kidney and liver to the mix) a few cups of brown rice, bag of diced carrots, frozen pureed squash, garlic cloves, diced zucchini, a couple of apples and then fill 3/4 full with water. I leave it in the oven on 350 for a couple of hours and comeback to a dinner ready to put in freezing containers. When I feed it to them I add some powdered supplements from the vet and they devour their meals!! They are ALL in EXCELLENT health, shiny coats, fantastic weights, etc. I will never feed any other way again. And it REALLY does not take up much time, if I can find it…anyone can.

Kerry @ 2:36 pm

I also am saving huge money by the way, over the kibble I used to feed. Fewer vet bills and have never needed fleas treatment either?? NOt sure why on that one but I've heard it is the garlic possibly??

Patricia Williams @ 7:36 pm

My two year old Pom has always had an excellent weight until this summer when she had four puppies (second litter). She and the puppies were very healthy. No problems at all with delivery; actually all four born within an hour and 15 min. My vet suggested she be on puppy food while she was pregnant and nursing. After she stopped nursing, I put her back on Purina One which she had been on prior to becoming pregnant. The problem now and my big concern is that she has been gaining weight like crazy since the puppies and is probably up to 10 lbs now. Her regular weight is about 5.5 to 6 lbs. How do I get this weight off of her and is it the purina food that is causing her to gain weight? Thanks for the help. Patricia (and Ms Millie)
